Frank Neuhauser

We just heard the unfortunate news of Frank Neuhauser’s death. He passed away on March 11, 2011 at age 97.

For those of you who are not aware of Frank Neuhauser’s unique importance to the bee, Mr. Neuhauser was the winner of the first ever National Spelling Bee back in 1925, representing the The Louisville Courier-Journal. He also made an appearance in the documentary Spellbound to briefly talk about his experience as a speller.

I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2008, when he paid a visit to the bee that year as an honored guest. It was humbling to meet the first winner of the spelling bee, and I was fascinated to hear his stories and accounts of the bee in 1925.

Mr. Neuhauser holds a special place in the hearts of spellers, and will continue to be a legacy of the bee.

Our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Frank Neuhauser.
