The 2017 North South Foundation Spelling Bee Finals concluded last weekend, and it was a very exciting event with so much talent in both the Junior and Spelling Bees. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the event – it was a tough competition with so many top spellers from around the country participating in the Senior Spelling Bee. We also witnessed a large number, more so than ever before, of budding talents participating in the Junior Spelling Bee finals.
We would like to thank our Chief Guests, Mrs. Paige Kimble (Executive Director at the Scripps National Spelling Bee) and Ms. Corrie Loeffler (Editorial Director at the Scripps National Spelling Bee), for taking the time to fly down to Houston to watch the NSF Spelling events. It is an honor for our organization to know that we have the support from the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We also want to thank Mrs. Kimble for sharing her words of wisdom as the keynote speaker at the awards ceremony.
Just like in some previous years, we raffled a signed Webster’s 3rd International Dictionary WITH a CD – ROM and FREE One Year Subscription to www.Merriam-WebsterUnabridged.com. Several past champions and top spellers, including our Chief Guests Mrs. Paige Kimble and Ms. Corrie Loeffler, signed the one of a kind dictionary. This dictionary is also now out of stock, making it even more unique. Congratulations to the lucky winner Dito John Manavalan and family!!
Thanks to various volunteers and participants on Saturday’s events, we were able to raise $650! That’s amazing! I’m excited to match that amount and donate $200 more to give a total of $1500 to NSF, which will provide 6 scholarships in India! I would also like to extend special thanks to a couple of magnanimous donors – Dr. Balu Natarajan and family (1985 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion), and Pamela and Grace Walters (coach of Rohan Rajeev). Thank you so much for your kind munificence!!
It amazes me how wonderful these spellers are each and every year. We are so excited to see the new spelling season begin soon – with class and school spelling bees just around the corner. Word Club is up and running for the new season – go ahead and register.
Good luck to all, and happy spelling!
